These paintings are the culmination of 20 + years of using photographic imagery as the starting point for my paintings.
I begin my creative process by taking carefully composed pictures. From these I’ll use a variety of techniques to transfer the photo image onto a panel or stretched canvas. Sometimes I’ll even project the image and hand draw it for use in my under-painting. I find having the structure of the photo-composition gives me a certain kind of freedom later on in the process that allows me to be more experimental- something that’s essential to my process.
After the under-painting is accomplished I generally use many layers of translucent acrylic and oil paints to build up my surfaces. In addition I use luminescent paint to give my paintings an unpredictable radiance that varies according to the viewer’s perspective. So, as you walk by one of my paintings you will see the colors change. Similar to how colors change in nature based on; different times of day or how the wind modifies the effect of sun light on leaves and branches.
